ECS: What You Need To Know

ECS: What You Need To Know

The endocannabinoid system or ECS is a network of receptors and transmitters that work hand in hand with the body’s immune system, helping maintain homeostasis*.

ECS is responsible for regulating response to diseases, feeding, pain, stress reaction, relaxation, sleep, cognition and memory.

The endocannabinoid system consists of three main components:

  • Endocannabinoids: messenger molecules that interact with the cannabinoid receptors in order to properly respond to the body’s changes.
  • Cannabinoid receptors: these receptors initiate the cell functions that regulate a myriad of physiological processes such as appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory among others.
  • ECS enzymes: these enzymes eliminate cannabinoids after they interact with the receptors so they aren’t stored in the body.

The way the endocannabinoid system works with CBD is through the CB1 and CB2 receptors, helping maintain equilibrium in the ECS by prompting improved cell response.  CB1 receptors are found in the nervous system and brain which by interacting with CBD, encourages the production of anadamide, “the bliss molecule” and it stops it from being broken down, thus staying active for longer. CB2 is found primarily in the immune system and its role is mainly protective. CBD also activated the 5-HT1A serotine receptors, lowering the levels of anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Regulating the endocannabinoid system is crucial because it controls our physiology, mood and everyday experience.

*Balance of factors every biological process in the body needs to function properly.
